And I knew you way back when you were a wee 23 year-old, sweeping me off my feet. Thanks for never stopping.
Happy 30th Birthday!!

Happy birthday, Josh. Don't fix any bicycles, walk unprepared in any trout streams, or drill any holes today. It would be depressing for you to end up in the emergency room for anything other than work on your birthday. Just think, in ten years I'll still be ten years older than you!

well Josh, 30 isn't that bad, i've been there a whole 3 months now, and can't say much has changed. that whole thing of not wanting anything or nothing special for your birthday hasn't ever worked for me, so doubtful it will work for you. if you figure it out you can tell me at one of the summer gatherings.. take care, HAPPY BIRTHDAY!!

Happy Birthday Josh,

Lets see, a birthday wish, how about a 30th B-day Top 10 list.

1. May you one day own a flock of sheep, I'll buy the trampoline and the white picket fence. BOING!

2. May you one day get the truth from an ER patient, fallen victim to a "freak bathroom accident".

3. May you one day catch da Tirty Pointer Trout on a beautiful flyfishing Saturday.

4. May you one day learn to play the banjo riff from Deliverance.

5. May you one day receive a thank you note and a smile from a chicken named Pepe.

6. May you one day have the opportunity to hand deliver Champy's love puppies.

7. May you one day see John Muir's portrait in a burnt piece of toast. Ebay will never be the same.

8. May you one day convince the neighborhood association to zone your house a tax free temple.

9. May you one day find a hot sauce that makes your eye's fill up and thank 'ol hired hand'.

10. Finally, may you one day wake up an old man still rockin to Alabama! "Oh play me some mountain music, like grandma and grandpa use to play"

Happy 30th, Mitch

Hello, JC. It's a lucky parent who has health, healthy children, good fortune, good marriage, and Irish heritage (we ignore the English and Welsh.) In so many ways my children--who are not really MY children, but children of the stars and the Universe--have made us proud. Your accomplishments, some perhaps unnoticed, are legion. The obvious--marathons, 2700 mile hikes, college--are easy to spot and ballyhoo. The proudest moments to me, however, are the more sublte. Your ability to make people smile, to make them feel important enough to warrant your time and conversation, your tolerance of different life styles and people, your tenacity, are often the most difficult for one of average humanity to grasp. Perhaps you can understand, it's not immitating a parent or following in footsteps that makes me proudest--it's making your OWN footsteps and following your heart, being true to who you are and constantly learning life's brief and hard lessons that are truly accomplishments. A good, gentle, compassionate man is a hard commodity to come by. You are all of those. And turning 30 is really no milestone for you, it's just another day. It is a milestone for me, however, to admire the man you continue to become. I'm thankful you're my son, and if I've done nothing else, I trust you know you can always count on me. Be well and enjoy a long lifetime, nuture a long love affair with those closest to you and with life itself. WARNING: PARENTAL ADVICE COMING--Sometime....go to the Cliffs of Moher and stand in the wind, knowing parts of your parents' and ancestors souls are there. Know there is no time in your life that I will not be in your heart. Also know--one of the best times in my entire life was Cooperstown. Many happy birthdays to come, Josh. Two quotes for you--"Forgiveness is the attribute of the strong." Gandhi "Young. Old. Just words." George Burns --I continue to re-read the Steinbeck books you gave me that Christmas. They are a precious gift I will enjoy for my lifetime. Keep reading Whitman and Thoreau and Emily. The answers are there. I love you, Josh. Dad

Happy birthday my friend! I have come to this blog about 3 times now and have not been able to put down any words. I have loved you since the 2nd day I met you.(The first day you told me jokes and I was afraid of you) "What did the frog say when he got hit by a car crossing the road?? I should have had my heavy luggage!" We have gone from childhood, to adults, and sometimes back to childhood together. Of all of my friends, you have been in my life the longest and I am always thankful for that. You have stuck up for me when it wasn't the cool thing to do, you have listened to me when I was not fun to listen to, you have made me laugh till it hurt(many times)and you have and continue to show me things through a wider lens. For all of these things and more I love you and look forward to 100 more years of friendship. Enjoy your day!

HEY JOSH - When I turned 30 I decided to lose 30 pounds, grow a beard and start running. Of those three, it looks like about all you can do is turn 30. You're an amazing, amazing guy and you've accomplished a lot in those short 30 years. Jane and I agree that the luckiest people in the world are people who have to go to the emergency room...when you're on duty. Just in case you are wondering how to measure success. SUCCESS IS:
At age 4 - not peeing in your pants
At age 12 - having friends
At age 16 - having a drivers license
At age 20 - having sex
At age 30 - having money
At age 50 - having money
At age 60 - having sex
At age 70 - having a drivers license
At age 75 - having friends
At age 80 - not peeing in your pants

JOSH - 2 things. First, in my previous post I wish to retract the beginning of the sentence, "Of those three" and begin the sentence "It..." And second, it just came to my attention that March 14th is also pi day in recognition of 3.14 (and on and on). I hope you (and Anna) go on and on and on.

Happy birthday to the only person I know who can wake up at 4:30 am ready to give everyone a hug, make coffee, feed the chickens, take Champ for a run, get some extra OJ, go for a Polar Bear swim, and talk about traveling- all at once! It's a great blessing for Scott and I to have you and Anna as friends. Here's hoping your next thirty years are full of happiness, adventure, and fulfilment.
Happy 30th to you!!

johnabee--

it's your birthday and, consequently, i am reminded of a beautiful birthday that you gave me lying under a stone looking back on sonora pass, a ziplocked bundle of han shan poems whose corners had been nibbled upon by some creature. it was a grand present, i carried it all the way to canada. now, it is your birthday, i wish i could give an equally wonderful gift but all i can do is wish you a unending feast of good moments, good friends, good skies, good drinks, it'd be nice to run into you again.

The man with many miles! You have accomplished so much in just 30 years! You make all your friends and family proud. You teach me something new every time we are together. I really enjoy our friendship and always look forward to our dinner clubs - good food, good friends, lots of laughs and great inquisitive conversation. I wish you the happiest of birthdays and many more miles traveled in the future! Love ya Josh!

Josh-
I still remember like it was yesterday when your pops took us down to see the All Star extravaganza at Wrigley. Us being knee high made those bombs by McGuire and the almighty(Ryno)Sandberg seem even farther than we ever thought we could get. Who knew that with as far as we did end up going with all life's twists and turns that we would end up practically being neighbors and pals after all. I'm proud to say we are friends and thanks for being you. Probably good that we didn't get to rabit hunt this winter because I'm secretly a haruspex, therefore I feel safe in saying beware the Ides of March, (unless someone delivers you a tasty bottle of Scotch the night before). Although as a good omen I foresee a long and fruitful life with many children and a great beard. May you catch 30 beautiful trout this summer in celebration of your .......... ability to catch trout well.
Happy Birthday Mate

Josh, you've made that next milestone in life, although it seems to me that there are so many more important life events we go through. I thing I'll always remember sitting in the middle of the river, the water of life flowing around and through, basking in the sun. It's amazing how much you've accomplished at this point in your life and will undefinatly continue on that path of greatness. Never forget to appreciate what we love, and love that which surrrounds us.
Take care buddy!

Yikes, I don't know what's scarier: the fact that you're 30, or the fact that we've known each other for 11 of those years. That's 36% of your life. Consider the following events, all of which lasted less than 11 years:

* The construction of the first transcontinental railroad
* The two World Wars, combined
* The Great Depression
* Disco

Also consider that if two squirrels met at the UW on the same day that we did, their great-great-great-great-great-great-great-great-great-great-great grandchildren would be cruising Bascom Hill today. And they would be carrying cell phones.

I know of few people who live more consistently with their ideals than you and Anna. Keep up the good work.

I can't believe you are 30! I thought you were more like 27. Thanks for being such a great friend. Your contagious energy was much appreciated in the EKG lab. It can also be entertaining. I remember you opening your chicken coop when it was about -5 out to show me the chickens dancing around in there and you called it a "chicken disco". That was funny, as are many of the things you say. Thanks for jogging with me and letting me borrow Champ to be my pace dog. Also, thanks for having me over for larb to get to know you and Anna better. They say the journey is the destination and you are one who has reached it.

Happy Birthday! It was great to spend some time with you and Anna in Bear country. Kate and I both know you were secretly looking forward to the big 3-0.

Even though you can't spend your birthday with us, maybe you can remember your day in Chicago:

Hope you have a fabulous 30th year. We would love to see you and Anna sometime this year and I'm sure that Tom would love to have a fly fishing companion this summer. Maybe if Greg Brown comes to Big Top again we could make a weekend of it... Have a good one!
